Installation of KSHITIJ Radar ESM EOIR and SDR payloads on DRDO FTB (Tender Refrence Number : LRDE/MMFD-PUR/22-23/23ATT035)
1. Introduction
LRDE has undertaken a project which is aimed at indigenization of four critical payloads for the Do-228 aircraft. The details of payloads and corresponding DRDO labs responsible for their development are indicated below:
S.N. Payload DRDO Lab
1. KSHITIJ Maritime Patrol Radar LRDE
2. EOIR (Electro Optic Infra-Red) IRDE
3. SDR (Software Defined Radio) DEAL
4. ESM (Electronic Support Measure) DLRL
1.1. System Configuration
LRDE is the nodal lab and is responsible for Aircraft Modification, Installation, Integration and Demodification of Payloads (KSHITIJ Radar, ESM, EOIR, SDR) intended for Do-228 Aircraft. As HAL is the OEM for Do-228 Aircraft, the activity of installation of the payloads on the aircraft, clearances for/and shakedown trails will be done by HAL. DRDO, FTB (Do-228, Tail No: KD707) for will be used for payload installation and evaluation purposes.
• Four Payloads to be developed as part of the project (KSHITIJ Radar, ESM, EOIR, and SDR).
3. Electronic Support Measure (ESM)
3.1. System Description
The ESM System will receive signals in the frequency band of 0.5-40GHz according to the mission programmed by the operator. The pre-flight mission data programming will be operator selectable with flexibility in system programmable features. The received signals after suitable conditioning and amplification will be processed by fast sampling Processing units with Instantaneous Bandwidth of 1000 MHz to supply the emitter tracks. Further sub bands can be programmed at digital level. The facility of inter and intra pulse analysis and library matching will be provided as an inherent feature of the system. The product tree is shown below

4. EO-IR (IRDE)
4.1. System Description
The Electro Optical Imaging Intelligent Stabilized System (EOI2SS) being developed for surveillance aircraft will be high performance dual axis 4 – Gimbal stabilized sighting systems for long range surveillance and reconnaissance with advanced tracking and image processing features and various digital interfaces. EOI2SS will be primarily a surveillance sight for the Do-228 aircraft for surveillance over sea/ocean. It will consist of EO sensors viz. Thermal Imager (Zoom & NFOV Spotter) (IIIrd Gen, MWIR, HD), Day TV (Zoom & NFOV Spotter (Colour, HD), SWIR Camera (NFOV Spotter) (HD) & Eye Safe Laser range finder / Laser Target Designator. Video target tracking capability facilitates high precision aiming on the target in dynamic conditions. The system will have advanced Tracking features and Geo Pointing and Geo Steering features. This facilitates long range surveillance, target acquisition and auto tracking during day as well as night
5. Software Defined Radio (SDR)
5.1. System Description
Airborne SDRs are the latest development in Aviation communication which provides encrypted Voice and Data capability including Mobile Adhoc Networking.
Both the Radio-LRUs will support V/UHF band on one channel having integrated 25W V/UHF PA, 50 watts L-Band and 100 watts UHF Band SATCOM PAs inside the LRU. A Radio Control Unit (RCU) will be used for management, configuration, monitoring and waveform/crypto parameters loading. 04-RCU configuration as per Naval requirements has been finalized – 02 (Master + Standby) in the central pedestal of cockpit and 02 at operator station in the rear. Later on, the 02 rear RCU will be replaced with HMI on TMS consoles as and when available. This multi-channel radio will have multiple data and audio ports. The voice will be interfaced with Audio Management Unit of the Airborne Platform (02 V/UHF + 01 UHF SATCOM).
The SDR system will be a four-channel radio having two V/UHF (30-512 MHz) channels, one L-Band (960-1240 MHz) and one UHF SATCOM channel. The SDR systems comprises of 03 major LRUs:
09 March 2023

Kshitij : Maritime Surveillance Airborne X Band Radar System
The versatile Maritime Surveillance Airborne X Band Radar System is designed for maritime surveillance and Search and Rescue (SAR) missions. It is easily adaptable to a variety of platforms for search, detection and tracking of multiple targets at long range. The radar has good sea-clutter suppression features to detect small targets. In addition to the standard air to sea surface search modes with TWS, this radar provides high resolution range signature and ISAR image of the target which enables the user to classify the intercepted target. There is an air to air mode to detect and track aerial targets. Other modes include weather avoidance, beacon and navigation. The Radar provides 360° azimuth coverage in both belly and chin mounted configuration.
Main Features
• Programmable signal and data processor
• Sea-clutter mitigation techniques
• Short blind zone for landing on ship
• High instantaneous bandwidth
• High resolution modes - RS and ISAR
• Interleaved TWS and RS Profile
• Staring mode for ISAR

Kshitij Radar for Shyen Project
DRDO is the nodal organization for development of the sensor suite for the Dornier Mid Life Upgrade program of the Indian Navy. The Radar uses an X band active array antenna with Transmit Receiver (TR) modules in a tile configuration. The development flight sorties for radar were conducted & Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery for planned test points was obtained. During the year 2024, User Lab Evaluation has been completed in two phases for Electronic Support Measures (ESM) system. The ESM System is being installed in the Aircraft at a DPSU
